I earned my PADI Open Water Diver Certification just days before my 23rd birthday and I started diving right away. Most of my dives have been in the exhibits at the Vancouver Aquarium (I logged exactly 200 dives in one year!), but I'm eager to add to my ocean dive log. On my last dive I got engaged, I wonder what'll happen next time I go diving!
| # | Date | Location | Buddy | Marine Life | Notes |
September 3, 2001 | Ogden Point | Dean | lingcod, tubesnouts, gumboot chiton, kelp crabs, sea cucumbers, fiance | This was the best dive ever! First, we saw all sorts of amazing sea life, then I proposed to Dean by writing "Will you marry me?" on my dive slate. He responded with the "OK" hand signal and we were engaged!
May 30, 2001 | Whytecliff Park | Dean | crabs, sea stars, fish & tires | Gradual entry from the shallow water was better for equalizing.
May 30, 2001 | Whytecliff Park | Dean | None | An attempt to descend a continue across the bay, short dive because Dean was having problems equalizing.
May 30, 2001 | Whytecliff Park | Dean | harbour seal pup, small red jellyfish, starfish, Dungeness crabs | Second dive with Dean, minimally better visibility but I was uncomfortable when I couldn't see the bottom.
March 28, 2001 | West Cates Park | Dean | tiny crab molt, Pisaster sea stars while getting out, great blue heron | First dive with Dean. We learned not to dive at low tide! We had a terrible dive, no visibility and Dean was having problems equalizing. It can only get better!
February 6, 2001 | Whytecliff Park | Doryan M. | my 1st two nudibranchs, a beautiful chiton, lots of sea stars (including some tiny ones), kelp greenlings, pink, leather, painted, common & sunflower stars, huge barnacles, green & red sea urchins, sea squirts, quillback rockfish, California sea cucumbers, small white plumose anemone | My pressure gauge leaked air, Doryan's mask continually flooded, Doryan's suit was too short and she got cold.
September 12, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Donnie R. & Andrea R. | flounder | Vancouver Aquarium checkout dive, basic SCUBA skills, did a somersault into my BCD
August 25, 2000 | Kelvin Grove | Cheryl T. & Alon | sea squirts! my 1st sea pen, crabs mating (again), brittle stars, loads of sea cucumbers, one cucumber escaping a sunflower star, cocky lingcod, rockfish |
August 25, 2000 | Kelvin Grove | Cheryl T. & Alon | crabs mating, large red jellyfish, sea stars, cushion star, orange plumose anemone, lingcod, goby |
August 25, 2000 | Kelvin Grove | Alon | none | Search for Cheryl's weight belt (she dropped it while at the surface). My dive computer wasn't working, always remember to check the battery at the store.
August 3, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Andrea P. | Tons of sunflower stars, lingcod, pink sea stars, leather stars, common sea stars, Dungeness crabs, sea cucumbers, kelp greenling, anemones, one urchin, painted sea stars, lots of mussell and clam shells | We descended before reaching the day marker and missed the plumose beds.
June 30, 2000 | Porteau Cove | Meagan R. & Andrea P. | Huge sea cucumbers, Dungeness crabs, towering plumose anemones, lingcod, pink sea stars, shrimp, founder | Weight belt difficulty at start, always make sure the strap is extra long. Ange didn't have both fins, always double check rented gear.
May 24, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Andrea P. | none (couldn't get down) | Naturalist dive with 12 people! Need more weight
May 16, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Allison G. | none | Open water training dive #4
May 16, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Allison G. | none | Open water training dive #3
May 15, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Allison G. | none | Open water training dive #2
May 15, 2000 | Whytecliff Park | Allison G. | Purple sea star, flounder | Open water training dive #1
